At South County Self-Protection, our mission is to empower you with the knowledge and skills to protect yourself and your loved ones in any situation.
We believe that self-protection is a fundamental right, and our goal is to equip you with the training necessary to make your surroundings
safer simply by being present.
Inspired by the state’s motto, Hope, we align our teachings with the principle of perseverance. The core of our art is to ‘Keep Going’—no matter the challenges you face. In learning to keep going, you discover that the secret to keeping hope alive lies in resilience,
even in seemingly hopeless times.
Our training group is dedicated to exploring and refining techniques designed to defend against real-world threats. We customize each individual’s experience to ensure maximum
effectiveness in self-defense and protection.
Our classes cover a wide range of skills, including punches, kicks, angling, counter-strikes, locks, throws, grappling counters, escapes, rolls, leaping, weapons, situational awareness, and mental endurance. Find yourself to be a capable protector on the path of self development.
Andrew Laurie has been a dedicated High School Social Studies teacher for over 15 years and brings that same commitment to his martial arts practice. His athletic journey began early—he played football from the age of 7 through Junior College, and at 12, he started training in Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate, continuing until the age of 17. Throughout his young adult years, Andrew explored various disciplines, training with practitioners of Boxing, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Aikido, Judo, Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, and MMA self-defense.
While working in security, a colleague at South County Hospital introduced him to a “Ninja Class” his son was attending in northern Rhode Island. This sparked a passion for Ninpo Taijutsu, which became Andrew’s primary focus in early 2000. He trained rigorously, five days a week, and within two and a half years, he began teaching introductory, beginner, and cardio Taijutsu classes. His dedication led him to attend national martial arts conferences and train with some of North America’s greatest martial artists.
In the fall of 2003, Andrew began training under his current teacher, with whom he continues to study as often as possible. Following his teacher’s suggestion in 2014, he started a training group in the form of high school anti-bullying clubs. In 2016, Andrew earned his black belt, but he remains, above all, a perpetual student of the martial arts.
Welcome to our Martial Arts Classes – Open to All Skill Levels
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced martial artist, you’ll discover new, complementary, and enriching techniques that enhance your movement and skill set. Our classes are designed to be fun, challenging, and effective, all within a safe, supportive, and non-competitive environment.
What to Expect:
• Realistic Training:
Students work with partners, practicing realistic attacks to develop precise timing and distance control.
• Safe and Ergonomic:
Training equipment is used to safely build strength, speed, and power, with a focus on maintaining ergonomic posture.
• Comfortable Facilities:
Classes are held in South Kingstown’s Recreation Center, where padded floors and mats add protection for rolling and break-falls.
Unique Curriculum:
Our curriculum is based on the Godai – the five intentions explored in Miyamoto Musashi’s Book of Five Rings. These elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and The Void) each correspond to a chakra or energy gate within the body. In essence, the way you move is shaped by the mindset or “ring” you are focused on. The techniques from nine traditional schools are filtered through these five ways of movement.
Progressive Learning:
• Beginners start by learning to hold their ground and angle away from attacks.
• Intermediate students develop timing and distance, gaining the ability to control situations or step back when needed.
• Advanced students refine these skills and apply them not only in martial arts but in everyday life.
Join us to explore this ancient practice and improve both your physical and mental agility!

Ninpo Taijutsu, known as The Way of the Enduring Spirit Warrior, is a reality-based battlefield martial art. The 33rd Grandmaster of Togakure Ryu described it as “the art of winning: achieving what you need while making the world a better place.” Our training adapts the time-honored principles of this ancient art into a modern Rhode Island context, while maintaining a world-class standard of practice.
The Togakure Ryu tradition, with over 900 years of history, is rooted in the knowledge and techniques developed by the legendary mystic warriors of Japan—the Ninja, or Shinobi. The system draws from nine schools: five are battlefield Samurai Jujutsu schools, three are shadow schools, and one was created by a former war general, a woman, who designed techniques for a smaller or weaker individual to overcome a larger, stronger opponent. These techniques are particularly beneficial for women, the elderly, or those recovering from injury, but they are effective for all.
With this rich heritage, you will gain practical skills, mental clarity, and confidence in a system that has stood the test of time, adapted for the realities of today.
